Blanden ask Lucas for a job.  Lucas turns him down.  It was when Mark said.....  "He makes me shiver, he's so ugly and, that arm of his!"

Lucas understood what Mark was saying, he felt uncomfortable with Blanden also.

Lucas realizes both he and Mark need a lesson in tolerance and acceptance of those less fortunate.

A lesson well learned!

I love when Lucas tells Mark they both needed some saving..."To try and hire both of us a clear conscience." I guess his arm looked pretty bad to a small boy. This is one of my favorite episodes the way Blanden and Sheridan had that great face off. I wish they had a sequel to that episode when Frank comes back for a visit with his healed wound.

No wonder his wound never healed they had men working as doctors who had no real knowledge of medicine, simple instruments and in some cases they took used badges from one soldier and put it on another soldier especially in the south.

Once in a while they show somethings on the battle of Gettsyburg and they have mention that more soldiers died from sickness then from the war.....

360,000 Yankees died–110,000 in battle and 225,000 of disease. The South lost 258,000 men–94,000 in battle and 164,000 to disease.

How sad!

I can only imagine what all Blanden must have gone through.  All the pain!  Royal Dano was excellent in this part!

It would have been nice for him to stop back at the ranch.

Came across this online. It was found in so many of The Rifleman episodes and part of what makes this show so timeless.

This is an excellent example of learning a lesson. Both Lucas and Mark learned from their experiences in this episode. Lucas was wise to go after Blanden, he not only helped Blanden but he help both he & Mark.

Thanks for posting this Western Gal!

You are SO right about Lucas helping Blanden.  loved the line when Mark says he cannot stand to look at him

Lucas replies......neither can I son.... which makes us both worse off than he is.  The writers used some intense lines many times.  I think the writers were before their time!!!!  we need more of that in TV today!
